shakesid1.jpgWood
Once the leading siding material in the nation, wood was, of course, the material of choice for early settlers. Wood is still a popular siding in new home construction, but the high cost of repainting and wood's tendency to deteriorate over time have caused nearly all the re-siding market to convert to non-wood products. As wood prices have risen due to environmental protection harvest restrictions, wood is being used less frequently as a siding material in new construction.

Polypropylene
The most recent addition to CertainTeed's extensive line of vinyl building products, Cedar Impressions®     Perfection and Half-Round Shingles and Rough-Split Shakes are manufactured from a specially blended polypropylene copolymer. This copolymer capitalizes on the rigidity, weatherability, and processing properties of polypropylene
and other micro-ingredients. Unlike our PVC siding, which is extruded, polypropylene Cedar Impressions® is injection molded into its authentic cedar shingle patterns.
The Siding Collection is a total package approach to exteriors. It begins with an unsurpassed selection of siding profiles, each designed for architectural accuracy and superior performance. Then we add expansive trim options, decorative details, and color choices, all of which work together to give each home a unique look.

Cedar Imcedar_impressions.jpgpressions® Rough-Split Shakes
Cedar Impressions® is CertainTeed's super premium siding. Cedar Impressions is a family of cedar style shingles available in three styles: Perfection Shingles, decorative Half-Round Shingles, and Rough-Split Shakes. Used on the whole house or as an accent, any one of these products provides dimension and texture to any home,
and they will not rot, crack, split, or cup like real wood shingles.

shakesid2.jpgReal Wood Appearance
It's almost impossible to tell the difference between a real cedar shingle and Cedar Impressions. To underscore how remarkably similar Cedar Impressions® is to its wood
Counterpart, consider how the product is made. Real cedar shingles are used to create rubber molds. The pattern is transferred onto a set of molds from which the Cedar Impressions panels are created.

Unique Construction
Cedar Impressions® Perfection and Half-Round Shingles and Rough-Split Shakes are suitable for just about any climate.
Thicker than standard lap siding and molded with color clear through, Perfection and Half-Round Shingles have a 3/8" panel projection, while Rough-Split Shakes has a 1" panel projection.
The high butt leg provides rigidity over the length of the panel as well as a distinctive shadow line. Molded ribs on the back of the panel provide
structural stability to help prevent warping and distortion. Unlike lap siding, Perfection and Half-Round Shingles and Rough-Split Shakes have a molded perimeter locking
system which does two things: It gives the installation a virtually seamless appearance from top to bottom, end-to end, and it enables the product to withstand high wind
load pressures. This accounts for the products' popularity in the coastal, hurricane-prone states.

Designability
Like wood shingles, Cedar Impressions® styles can be interchanged to create a unique, decorative effect. Also, all three styles can be installed with lap siding for a
custom look.

Finally, Cedar Impressions® styles can be installed with ordinary siding accessories, including wide decorative trim that resemble the lumber trim found on the most expensive, wood-shingled homes. These accent pieces, or lineals, are available in 3-1/2 in. and 5 in. widths to resemble 1 x 4 and 1 x 6 boards. When the job is completed, these lineals look like traditional wood carpentry. Mitered Cornerposts are available for Perfection Shingles and Rough-Split Shakes.
When installed with nails, Cedar Impressions® D7 Perfection Shingles have been tested to withstand negative wind load pressures up to 85 psf, which
converts to 180 mph.

Hints and tips
First and foremost, any re-siding project should improve a home's appearance and protect it from the elements. However, most older homes were not built with energy conservation is mind. Re-siding should also improve a home's energy performance.

Choosing the Right Company
While most siding lasts forever, the same can't be said for contractors that sell siding
Avoid using "fly-by night" contractors; they may very well be long gone when problems arise.
Choose a reputable contractor such as Dave's Galster [Dave's Custom Siding] who has been in the business over 27 years. We have an office an warehouse located here in the SLC utah valley- not one who works out of their truck

When choosing a "lifetime product," it is equally important to deal with a company that will be around as long as you are. It will cost a few dollars more, but most things worth having done are worth having done right.

APPLYING INSULATION  Use insulation as an underlayment for the siding.
Adding extra insulation is a plus as it helps reduce utility bills and soundproof the home.
The insulation used does not have an extremely high R-value; however, R-value can be misleading at times.
In order to reduce your utility bills you must stop air infiltration and regulate hot/cold airflow.
Most insulation is made of Styrofoam or polystyrene and some have a plastic or foil moisture barrier.

A moisture barrier is an important feature because it helps keep the old wall dry.
Most insulations are available in either 4' x 8'sheets or fanfold style-4' x 50' bundles and besides insulating the home, they help create a flat, even wall to work with.
In short, use insulation under your new siding. It will solve a multitude of problems.
Details That Keep Walls Watertight
Careful detailing of house wrap and flashing connections will reduce maintenance and lengthen the working life of structural components in wood-frame structures.use house wrap or felt paper on ALL houses newly built or resided.
the wrap should be continuous and carefully installed. Give wind-driven rain the respect it deserves. Plan on rain penetrating the siding under certain weather conditions.
to gauge your house wrap details: imagine droplets of water running down the surface of house wrap. Be sure that all pathways into the envelope are protected by an overlapping arrangement of house wrap and flashings.
provide water that penetrates the siding with an unrestricted path down and out of the space behind the siding.
wall membranes should overlap by 3-inches horizontally and 6-inches vertically. All seams should be taped.
